Trappist

Ancient Brewing Tactics

Blending the sound of crust-punk, D-beat, and power violence with their love of hops and barley, Trappist play a tongue-in-cheek take on the normally furiously political sound associated with acts such as Discharge, Iron Reagan, and Neurosis, as heard on their 2018 debut Ancient Brewing Tactics.

Formed in 2014 by Chris Dodge, Phil Vera, and Ryan Harkins, the trio set about bringing together their history of playing in hardcore and punk bands with their love of beer. After a handful of live shows, the band signed to Relapse Records to release their debut album. Recorded at Vera's Veracuda Studios in Los Angeles, Ancient Brewing Tactics arrived in 2018 and saw the band joined by Municipal Waste's Tony Foresta, Torche's Steve Brooks, and Pig Destroyer's Blake Harrison. The album also included a recommended craft beer pairing for each of the album's 21 tracks.- Rich Wilson (allmusic.com).

Cross Faded

A lethal combo of fastcore, sludge, power violence and underground hardcore punk. Trappist have all the hallmarks of a cult band, not least because one of their members is Chris Dodge, the godfather of the powerviolence genre and veteran of legendary acts such as Spazz and Infest. Opener, ‘Cross Faded,’ starts with the sound of someone flipping a beer bottle lid and fires into a feedback drenched extravaganza of crusty d-beat hardcore before you can dwell on the prospect of a cold one from the fridge. Trappist deliver exactly what you want – the music is violent, it’s rough, it rocks, and it borders on comedy genius. By the time we get to ‘Amateur Hour,’ Trappist have us in the grip of their beer mugs with a monstrous blast of late-90s’ metallic hardcore, like Vision of Disorder but with sonic-doomed guitar chugs coated in fuzz. Pure genius! - screamblastrepeat.com
